Is 2 weeks notice required in the US?
No. The US is "at-will" — no statutory notice required by either side (except Montana). 2 weeks is a strong cultural norm to maintain your reference and reputation, but legally optional.
What about non-competes?
Separate from notice. Non-competes are increasingly unenforceable (especially in California, and the FTC has tried to ban most nationally). Have an attorney review yours before signing offer letters at competitors.
What's "garden leave"?
Common in UK/EU finance — your employer keeps you on payroll during notice but bars you from working (including for competitors). Useful for them; mixed for you (steady paycheck, lost momentum).
Should I negotiate severance when terminated?
Often yes. If laid off (especially as part of a group), you may be offered a severance agreement requiring you to waive legal claims. Have an employment attorney review before signing.
