FAQ

How do I calculate my accrual rate?
Hours per year / pay periods. E.g., 80 hrs (10 days) / 26 biweekly periods = 3.08 hrs per period. Some companies bracket by tenure (more hrs/year after N years).
What's "use it or lose it"?
Some policies cap how many hours roll into the next year — anything above that is forfeit. California and a few other states treat accrued PTO as wages and prohibit forfeiture; in those states unlimited carryover applies even if your policy says otherwise.
Why does my balance not match my HR system?
Pay period boundaries vary, and HR systems often account for partial periods or pending requests. This is a rough estimate; your HR system is authoritative.
Should I take all my PTO?
Yes. Research consistently shows PTO reduces burnout and improves performance. Unused PTO is unpaid work.
