FAQ
What's the catch with no-tax states?
Florida, Texas, Tennessee, Nevada, Washington, Wyoming, South Dakota, Alaska, and New Hampshire have no income tax. They make up revenue through higher sales tax, property tax, or other sources. Cost of living is a separate factor — see the Cost of Living Adjuster.
Why does state tax shown here look low?
These are estimated effective rates at ~$100k. Many states have graduated brackets — actual tax depends on your specific income within those brackets. For very high incomes in CA/NY/OR/HI/DC, the top marginal rate matters a lot.
Does this include local tax?
No. NYC residents pay an additional ~3.9%, San Francisco has a payroll tax for employers (not employees directly), and some cities (Philadelphia, Cleveland, etc.) have local income taxes.
What about property and sales tax?
Not included. A holistic move calculation should include those — Texas has no income tax but high property tax; Oregon has no sales tax but high income tax.
Disclaimer. Estimates only. State tax uses simplified effective rates. Local taxes, property tax, sales tax, and cost of living differences not included. For relocation decisions, use the Cost of Living Adjuster too.
