FAQ

Why include PTO value?
PTO is paid time you don't work. If your salary is $100k and you take 20 days off, the company is paying you $7,692 to not work — that's real compensation.
How do I value private company equity?
Tricky. The "value" of a private grant is the 409A valuation × shares, but that may be worth far more (at exit) or zero (if the company fails). Many use a discount — value at 50% of the grant for moderate-stage startups.
What about Year 1 cliff for equity?
This calculator amortizes equity equally over the vest period for simplicity. Most 4-year grants have a 1-year cliff (25% at year 1, then monthly), so Year 1 is similar but Years 2-4 differ slightly.
Is the 401(k) match worth that much?
Yes — it's free money. A 4% match on a $100k salary is $4,000/year. Over a career, that compounds dramatically.
Do you save my inputs?
In your browser only. Nothing sent to any server.
Disclaimer. Estimates only. Equity values assume grant prices hold. Private company equity may be worth far less or more than its current 409A valuation. Tax not deducted from these figures.
